The department stores in Ipswich and high street names are predominantly conveniently situated in Tavern Street and the Buttermarket. These two streets run parallel to each other with a few interesting shops in the street linking and spurring off from them. However, the discerning shopper and interested visitor should walk towards the original centre, as it was originally known, of ‘Gippeswick’ which was naturally centred by the river.
Over the years this area became run down as the importance of the docks waned and centre of the town shifted. Now a massive redevelopment programme is underway at the docks including the building of Suffolk’s first university. This has lead to a development of small boutique shops, restaurants and bars
